Working out, going to the gym, etc. can be very overwhelming. This guide is aimed to relieve your movement anxieties.
Why Should I Move My Body?
Movement is an essential piece of living a healthy lifestyle. Moving your body promotes healthy joints, strong bones and muscles, but I'm sure you already knew that. More importantly, movement promotes better mental health.
How Can I Move My Body?
While it may seem intuitive or easy to just move more, sometimes it's not. Every body is different, therefore, every body likes different movements. This is extremely important to remember.
When you were forced to do PE in school, you might have hated it (I absolutely hated it). This might be because many PE classes are structured around running. Running is not the only way to move your body, and more importantly it is not always the best way to move your body. It depends on your specific body.
It is important to find what movement your body loves. I can only speak to myself, but my body thrives off of low-impact movements - think yoga, pilates, barre, swimming.
How Often Should I Move?
Again, speaking for myself, I aim to move everyday. However, the intensity of movement depends on the day. In a very usual week: I will go on a short walk 4-5 times, and do an intense workout 3-5 times. Every week is very different though. Always incorporate rest days, your body needs those too! Don't get too caught up in how often you should move. Aim to move more, that's it.
Experiment with Movement
Because my body loves low-impact movements, that is how I choose to move my body everyday. Here are some resources for low-impact workouts. If these are not your style try boxing, running, or jumping rope.
